Cowboy Cup Country Series finale

May 17, 2018

The 2017-2018 Cowboy cup series was completed at Kingaroy last Saturday night with another action packed display by the Modlites. In what was there first trip to the venue that will host next years Australian title crown the drivers certainly didn't disappoint the parochial crowd. The frenetic night hosted three heat races per river, 2 dashes and a 20 lap main event.

Scott Lehfeldt and Klinton Hancey shared 2 wins a piece after the heats to start in pole position of both the A and B dashes. Both would go on to record wins in the dash and secure the front row of the A main. Local hero Travis Barron was having his first hit out in the Steve Collins owned modlite and certainly impressed the home crowd grabbing a second in heat 3 and setting quicktime in the B dash. A notable omission after heat 2 was the retirement of outgoing Cowboy Cup series champion Terry Leerentveld, After a strong drive to second in heat 1 Terry was unable to avoid a spinning car making heavey contact and forcing the car onto the trailer and out for the night.

Lehfeldt got the jump into turn 1 of the A Main and headed straight up track to run the high line. Hancey was forced to the low line with both cars having the advantage at opposite ends of the track and a great side by side battle ensued. Chris Were and Sam Gollschewsky were making moves in traffic and looked the fastest two cars on the track. Ultimately Gollschewsky headed infield after just grabbing second position with engine problems. Nathan Politch inherited third spot and set his sights on Hancey and Lehfeldt. With the white flag in sight a late race spin forced a green/white chequer. It was now anyones race although Lehfeldt had other ideas as he stretched a small gap on the re start to greet the chequered flag untouched. Hancey seemed to struggle on the last lap as the hungry pack circled. Politch, Neil Gregson and Chris Were where all on the charge for the podium minors. Out of turn 4 Hancey had done enough to take second and secure the series win. Neil Gregson was able to pip Nathan Politch for third with the 46 machine settling for 4th. Chris Were rounded out the top 5. Casey Collins having his first drive in a senior category and his first ride in the category had a very consistent night grabbing a top 6 finishing position, he will certainly be one to watch as he comes to grip with a Modlite.

That wraps up a successful Cowboy Cup Country Series. The Qld Modlites travelled to Kingaroy, Toowoomba, Maryborough, Gympie, Gatton and Rockhampton this season and we would certainly like to thank the venues and promoters for there support of Modlite racing.
